When the Smallest Topples the Giants of the Dark

If I had not seen it with my own eyes, I would not have believed it. There in my own little backyard garden was the animal version of “David and Goliath.” (Although I was so impressed by the little wren that I drew her larger than what would be proportionate with the opossum.)

The main difference was that the part of David had been portrayed by the smallest of our permanent backyard birds, a Momma Wren. The part of Goliath was portrayed by the fiercest of the nighttime predators, a Momma ‘Possum, out for a pre-sunset prowl.

If you had been there and had listened closely, it may have seemed as if the Wren was calling loudly and fearlessly, “I was here first. This is my tree, and it is my home. You need to find another tree. Load your babies onto your back, tell them to hold on tight, and then take them away to a new home.”

The Opossum could only protest with lies.

“Surely you wouldn’t mind if I checked to make sure they are alright. I do have medical training.”

“You only want to see if they are sufficiently tasty for you and your own little ones,” said the wren.

Gracie and the other chickens saw how the smallest wren could topple over the giant predators that would invade the Garden Home. This gave them the courage to want to do the same to Professor Accipiter and The Absence of Love.

They saw that it was possible, and as a result, it would indeed be possible.

Author’s Confession: There have been times when my stories have been likened to fables. Yet here I am sharing another one. I consider them to be more like parables than fables, but both are intended to teach and to help make the world a better place!
